went to the erawan cave and the mrs paid 20 baht donation for our right of passage up the seemingly never ending steps.
on the desk was a book for tourists both thai and farang to sign, i was about to sign the book when the attendant told my wife to stop me from doing that.
being a tame farang i immediately did what my wife said and did not sign the book. the reason my wife explained was if i signed the book and the man who counts the money and the attendances-money ratio would expect to see more in the tin, because a farang had visited that day.
i dont have a thai drivers licence yet, hopefully thats sorted out next trip, but i have never been double priced at a park/waterfall, for reasons unknown.
no doubt with farangs holidaying/expatting in certain areas it has improved the infrastructure to great extents.
without the farang money would the medical/dental specialists, teachers, half decent tradesman exist in those areas, no way is my thought.
minimun wages are set by province, and the provinces favoured by farangs have a higher wage rate than nakon nowhere, ok so 10 baht extra a day is not much to many thais and farangs, but to a unskilled worker its maybe 8% more wage and most people would not complain about an 8% increase for the same work, bearing in mind, living away from their village increases their expenses.
farangs create wealth and infrastructure, perhaps for the better or the worst, that statement is obviously open to the individuals interpretation.
