I found that my 15" old HP laptop did fit in the hotel safe, but that my new Dell 15" does not. The Dell 6400 is thicker. My old HP was one stolen from my car in London so there are thieves everywhere.
I like to take my laptop for music and games and internet and I lock it in my suitcase. I guess if a thief has targetted me and my laptop then he may steal the suitcase anyhow. I don't tend to take the laptop to the swimming pool. The advice on backing up data is very good. I put all my important stuff on a 4 gb flash drive. The 4 gb & 8 gb flash drives are very portable and not expensive. You should back up data not programmes / games etc. The actual amount of really important data (letters, documents etc) is surprisingly small.
