i say this often, and really believe it. my gf is one of the smartest people i have ever met. her ability to learn and retain information astounds me.
but to be honest. i worked at her. i think i have had conversations with her that most on this board would find silly. some of the things about the world that i have taken the time out and explained to her and i have seen a change where she knows and understands what happens in the world, and even better, wants to know
i dont think many people are patient enough and like LIL sais, look for other places to have those conversations without really taking the time to have it with their wifes or gf's

paul, i think its if your vision to have an equal partner, not just a compliant thai partner/servant, you will put in the effort to increase her level of comprehension of bigger things, than the price of fruit at the market, and she of course wants to learn due to her naieve but latent intelligence.
on personal experience, the atlas is never now faraway, due to the wifes exposure to people from various backgrounds she is now exposed to.
my brief rundown of the politics behind these peoples immigration usually has to follow.
one of her best friends at school is tibetan, she sits with the thais, koreans, japanese and africans, she virtually ignores the chinese people.
my wife asked me about this, because the chinese speakers speak to her tibetan friend in chinese, but my wife sensed her reluctance to have any real conversations with them.
her questions about this relationship, resulted in a "my view on tibet", now the wife understands and is fully supportive of her tibetan friends view.
