It comes down to a case of: Demographic and Revenue increase.
These are not opposing factors (opposite end of a spectrum) but are the main factors taken into consideration. Of course it's dependent on the marketing strategy of the hotel, as to what weighting both these factors are given.
Whilst I understand and appreciate the concept of the Joiner Fee, it will currently influence my choice of accommodation.

During my stay in Sept (maiden voyage) I had to pay a 1 time Joiner fee of 500bht to have a guest stay with me for the duration of my stay. (double room)
Whilst I agree this can raise discrimination issues due to environment. IMO believe that hotels should not be able to charge you a Joiner fee, if you have booked a double room and disclose the identity of both parties that will be staying in the room for the duration of the stay. The same principle can be applied to "same sex couples' and other forms of discrimination. (Principles of Human rights)
