Its very unpleasant that this should happen and of course this should NOT happen - but unfortunately every country has its share of opportunist thugs so exercising a degree of caution when traveling makes sense.

As much as it pains me to say it, I agree with Kev. Common sense has to prevail a bit here. I've not been here long enough to be able to say "It didn't used to be like this" but it is now!
I'm sure we can all think of another country where we wouldn't even consider leaving the hotel compound after dark. For me......The Gambia, Jamaica, Mexico, Cuba, Goa, Kenya, South Africa............All holiday destinations and I think we have more freedom or 'safety' of movement here at night than lots of places I could mention.
You have to have your wits about you. Perhaps the hotels and B&B's could make more of a point of mentioning it to thier visitors. Riding my bike at night after a few beers..........Guilty as charged, got the t-shirt etc..........But I know which roads I won't be riding along after dark.
