I've often wondered about how well they engineered the hillside construction in LOS.
There is a vacant hillside in a town near where I live, and the story goes that back in the 50's a big apt. complex was built up there, and slid down the hill. But now when they build a house in an area where there is a potential for sliding, the they drill well into the bedrock beneath the soil, and pin the structure into the rock with steel-reinforced concrete caissons, that are poured in place to make a friction fit. Then even if the soil slides out from under it, the house does not move. But I don't think they would allow them to build large apt. buildings in areas of potential sliding anymore.
