I assume your laptop doesn't have a wireless card at present? That is what I can conclude from your post.
If so, and you are in the US or the UK now, I would get one there, and set it up at home before you leave.

If I have the wrong end of the stick, and you have a wireless enabled laptop, then there are quite a few places you can connect to a wifi spot. Lots of hotels have them, and it maybe just a case of paying a small amount for the encryption code to get connected. Will you be in Phuket? , as there are many places you can connect there.
