As for me, I wanted to do the Skytrain ride because I wanted to experience it, not to save money. If you are going to BKK and never did the Skytrain before then try it out.
Same in KL, I tried the new express train from Airport to KL Sentral and then took a taxi to my hotel. On my way back to Phuket, I used taxi to airport.
Hm, I havent tried the new subway in Bangkok yet.
