It really depends on your bargaining skills. Generally first timers pay far too much for what they get. I will not pay any more than a third of the original asking price, I usually pay less than that.
Always remember you are the one with the money. The seller only makes a profit if you decide to buy. You can choose the seller you wish to buy from.
I agree that Bangkok is by far cheaper than Patong, to get a bargain in Patong you must be prepared to haggle hard.
Normally the amount of stuff you can take home is restricted by weight unless the stuff you bought is valuable.
