Unfortunately it appears to be part of a growing trend in sports events.
Used to be that you would go to a game to cheer your team and applaud the opposition when they score.
Today it is all about trying to influence the outcome of the game from the stands.
Soccer has done so for a long time, other sports are rapidly catching up.
Rugby was known for it’s knowledgeable and sporting fans. And still is in some places.
But booing and jeering when an opposition player lines up a kick at the posts has become part of the game in many fans eyes..
Here in SA the crowd, or at least a part of it have taken to singing loudly when the All Blacks perform the Hakka..
That is up there with singing jeering during the opposition’s national Anthem as far as I am concerned.
Cricket is beginning to have it’s problems with crowd behavior of late.
There was a Ryder Cup a few years ago that was decided on the last hole and reports were that a few USA fans did their level best to influence the outcome with some decidedly un golf like behaviour.
But then the players today are not much better
Who walks in cricket these days and what about sledging?
Soccer players who take a dive or fake an injury to get a penalty.
And boxers who turn the whole pre fight ritual in to a soap opera.
