Paul, after reading the thread again, I think the missing link was a kind of official financial guarantee letter, which was to be issued by you. Of course I do not know the Canadian rules for vacation visas, but this is how I understood it. I can just imagine how upset Ao must have been.

In my case and for Ta's holiday day visa which is valid max. 90 days, I have to provide a handwritten invitation letter, salary slips of the last 3 months with matching print outs of my bank statements where is shown that he salary really was paid to me. And finally an invitation/guarantee letter which is legalized by the some civil cervant in my local City Hall.

Beside her passport, Ta has to provide letters that makes it clear she will return to Thailands before the expiry date of her visa, a return ticket and a health/travel insurance covering the entire duration of her stay.

The main reason for a visa refusal by the Dutch embassy is called "danger of settlement", hence the visitor will not return to the home country after the visa expires. Is that the same for the Canadian one?

Anyway, I truly feel sorry for you both and pray to Buddha we will be spared from this verdict next month.
