My opinion on this is very different.
It is no where near normal.
The bars are closed for 2 full nights and 1 half night. The bars may open on the half night, but I've never seen it when there is a full closure. Patong is full of people wandering around looking for something to do, completely board.
If will be caught by this, start planning now. Maybe a quite get away to Krabi. Pop down to Singapore or KL. Buy a big stack of DVDs to watch in your hotel room.
Just don't plan on being out at a bar for these 4 nights and 2 half nights.
