This is common practise for medical insurers, in the event of a claim they complete a medical and take a look at any medical records they can get.
Certain conditions, also will have a history and will have surfaced before, it was the main thing I hated about selling medical insurance in the UK, and would avoid as best as possible at every enquiry.
As the salesman you could only ask the given questions, the insurers would never offer a free medical prior to cover or prior to a claimable event, as they like the pre-existing get out clause. Then of course it always became the salesman that was at fault in the clients eyes for not telling them before they had paid x,000 pounds.
You could never argue the non-payment as they always had the upper hand with private medical background knowledge, to kill off any attempt at arguing, and of course you didn't have adequate medical knowledge to challenge them.
They can decide to not pay out because of non-disclosure of an ailment that has absolutely nothing to do with the claimable event, as non-disclosure forfeits cover.
At least you are with one of the better medical insurers with BUPA, just wish you all the best.
