i am an important cog in a small wheel and without sounding arrogant i am a very valuable commodity.
so, yes my age and experience say i should know better, but i booked the trip on the back of a fantastic first trip and didnt give two hoots to who it affected.
anyway i think from the advice above, i am going to go with the tack of asking how they feel about me having a month away from work (and keeping quiet that its allready booked)- seeing what the reaction is- if they say ok then allwell, if they say no, then i tell them that i apologise but it is booked and i am going anyway- i will keep the fact that i have already had two job interviews and two more lined up for next week up my sleeve. my notice would be more worrying.
so, roll on april thats all i can say.
i will post the aftermath in the next day or two!

i guess we were off the mark because we did assume someone with a good job would value that and at 45, have enough maturity and respect to know how to handle the situation better
i do commend you for stating your case and not getting too riled up with our repsonses though
