There used to be a cap in English football, until Jimmy Hill and others fought to remove it. Made the owners a fortune and gave most players little (good and bad points to this. But for the 'right' player there were ways around the rules. Just like there is now, including American sports!)
Now it has gone to the other extreme. All the money going out of the game to the players and there silly 'WAGS', horse acing and golf clubs!
Back then in the 50's, my dad turned down a contract with Swansea or Cardiff and a couple of high profile clubs due to the money being offered. (I say he, but I mean his Mother! My father never found out about this until after he married my mother, 10-12 years later.)
