Over here you drive in convoy at break neck speed down the center of the road (or sidewalks if necessary) and literally ram people off the road if they don't pull over to the side (it's called self preservation). I'm not sure Phuket is ready for me ....555555.....or.....maybe I will fit right in. I would be more comfortable on a bike, maybe that's the route to go.

You would be surprised how quickly you get used to driving on the wrong side of the road. No problem at all.

Renting a car is much, much safer than motabike. With many motorbikes driving abreast, fanning out across all lanes, even into oncoming lanes, it gets a little crazy. Thais have been driving this way all their lives, so they have some idea of what the other drivers are thinking and what to anticipate. For a farang it can be confusing and dangerous. The last stats I saw were for 2001 in which there were 128 fatalities in motorcyle crashes on the island of Phuket, and thousands of injuries requiring hospitalization! So it is even dangerous for Thais. How many BGs do not have a scar or chipped tooth from accidents?

Good luck, and drive safely. Couldn't be as dangerous as Iraq, at least!!
