When you want to rent a car in Chiang Mai and leave in Bangkok, you have to rent it from big rental companies. These are normally cheaper, when you book directly in Europe. Or you look for a car with driver who is going back later to Chiang Mai. The pay for the driver is about the same as when you buy full insurance for your car, The road from Chiang Mai to Bangkok ist mostly highway, sometimes going through cities.
