As a "newbie" I would, at the very least, suggest what you intend to pay.
If you have a specific maximum in mind you should indicate that.
It doesn't have to be a negotiation, but a mutual understanding is always good. This includes any "special requests" you may have. If there is certain things that are important to you, bring it up before you leave the bar.
