Songkran is too long - 7 days holiday is inviting this mass lunacy - far better would be to reduce the Songkran holiday to 2 days (as is the New Year proper) then the likelihood of Thai's sinking into a 7 day alcoholic stupor would be diminished - and would give a shot in the arm for the nation's productivity.
An alcohol ban would also result in a hoarding of booze before the holiday - for both Thai's and tourists - such attempts at prohibition however well intentioned would not result in the desired effect IMO.

Agree. Banning alcohol sales is not going to significantly reduce the number of deaths IMO. Everyone would just stock up beforehand and carry on as usual. The only ones hurting are the establishments and the tourists.
More police checkpoints would be the only solution. And checking for drunk drivers ALL YEAR AROUND. Now there's an idea. Point would be to TRY changing the mentality.
