Thais warned to be prepared for natural disasters

(BangkokPost.com) – The director of the meteorological department has warned that Thailand could meet the same fate as Burma in the future and warned that everyone needs to be prepared for it.

Suparuek Tantrirattanawong said areas in Thailand susceptible to natural disasters such as typhoons and cyclones coming from the Bay of Bengal include Satul, Phang-nga, Krabi, Phuket and Ranong.

He urged all locals in risk areas to always be prepared for emergency situations and stressed that they should be educated about the possible dangers of natural disasters. He assured that the meteorological department has the proper equipment to assess the build-up of tropical storms and depressions to a certain level so that locals can be immediately warned of any unusual weather patterns by at least a week in advance.

Mr Suparuek believee cyclone Nargis, the first that came from the Indian Ocean, was the result of the changing weather pattern around the world. He warned Thais should be more aware about the global environment because Thailand is surrounded by the Indian Ocean on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other.
