Been searching to see when Thailand was last hit by something similar. Looks like it was Typhoon Gay, a tropical cyclone which caused significant damage in province Chumphon of Thailand in 1989.

During the landfall in Thailand, Gay claimed at least 458 lives, also more than 600 fishermen were reported missing. Two hundred fishing vessels were lost and major damage was done to the coral reefs.
