When last I was in Phuket, I went to the taxi meter stand, where I met a Dutch fellow and we decided to split a taxi as we were both going to Patong.
They got really pissed at us, and told us we were not allowed to share a taxi. After some arguing, they said we could share one for 400 Baht apiece. We told them where they could go in no uncertain terms, and there was a lot of rude remarks and gestures made by them at us. We told them thank you very kindly, you bunch of a-holes, and went and got a "limo," for 600, thereby saving 100 per, and having a good laugh as the limo drove by the taxi stand and they yelled names at us and we laughed and gave them the finger!
