I have stayed at many places in Bangkok from the Conrad, Imperial Queens Park.., down to Worburi, Royal Asia and others.

Plan to give the Landmark Hotel a shot. Found a rate of $58 (@2,200 Baht) for a double. It can't be too bad for a 3 or 4 star. Its not dirt cheap, but at least it won't be smelly.

Looking at one night at the Sawasdee Sukhumvit Inn to catch the bus to Pattaya. At $558 Baht for a double it should be okay for a 1 star. Bus Station a short walk away.
