First of all Moscow hotels are quite expensive compared to what they offer. We usually stay in the Marco Polo hotel. Here is their website link:

It is relatively close to downtown and close to Tsverkaya Street, which is one of the main kind of avenues. It is not too big and has a reasonable decent breakfast buffet. I stayed there for the last 4 or 5 trips. Also an advantage is, that it is not overwhelmed by those tourist hordes fighting for breakfast because they woke up too late and still have to catch their tourbus.... 5555555....
