1) you will always find somewhere to stay, but just turning up may mean doing a lot of searching around if places are full. Why not make a note of a few hotels on the internet that you like the look of and choose one that you like the most. Then, phone up and make a reservation. This gives you the option so that if you arrive and don't like the place, you can check out and try one of the others.
2) I have never driven but as long as you don't "assume that it will be the same as back home" then you should be OK. If you go with the flow you should be alright, but remember to look around for motorbikes, your accident if you have one will be hitting one of these because you didn't see it !!
I have been 7 times to Thailand and although I can see that their driving etiquette is not too great, I have never seen an accident.
