Mosti - If you are a novice to Thai roads and road users, then I thoroughly recommend that you DO NOT rent a motorbike!!
If you want to travel to the beer bars, take a Tuk Tuk. If you want to travel around Phuket Island, hire a jeep or something similar.
I've been lucky in that I've only got a couple of bike accident 'tattoos' from my times in LOS.
but the thai forums are littered with details of deaths and serious injuries from bike accidents in Thailand.
If you're worried about cost, then weigh it up against an extended stay in hospital or something even more permanent.
