Apparently you can "bid" for seats but I have never come across anyone who has actually bought tickets this way. For example if the current price is £430 (as per Dawsey's comment) and you bid £300 for the same ticket and then wait to see if you are successful or not.

at least you can choose your airline and price is variable if you are flexible with your dates.Even though its a usually busy time,I would expect plenty of hotel choice still.
