The correct spelling is expatriate, which came as a bit of a surprise to me, as I assumed it meant someone who was no longer a patriot, since they deserted their homeland. It just means someone who had left their homeland to live in a foreign land. Incidentally, a repatriate is someone who return to his homeland after some time spent living in a foreign land.
