This is my own opinion of what I would consider to be a 'western' country.

Historically, I'd guess western Europe, north America and Australia. I’d suggest that there are broad similarities between these countries in terms of political systems, religion's, culture and their economies etc. These regions are considered to be well developed, technologically advanced, stable and civilised compared to the rest of the world.

Now any country anywhere in the world that develops and meets at least most of the above criteria could be considered to be a ’westernised’ country.

‘West’ also sounds positive and suggests democracy and prosperity etc, whereas ‘east’ is seen as negative in comparison and perhaps gives thoughts of communism and dictatorships i.e., East Germany, Russia, China etc.
