I went there in january and the same thing happened. They stopped me at a 'travel agent' and tried to get me to go for a hotel for 900 baht per night.
My friend and I just told them we already have a booking at Expat (lie!). We went there and the driver did go to the counter girls, speaking Thai, demanding something I guess.
So after he left, we walked a bit to Yorkshire Inn. Got a good rate and never saw the taxi driver again. It's just a minor incovenience and a simple no is good enough.
