I understand that the reason why many Thai's real names are so long compare to other cultures. It is because many Thais are Chinese descent during the '40s and they had to change their original Chinese name to Thai so that they are more accepted by Thais in general.

But how can you tell if a name is male or female? And where do their nick name, both males and females, come from?

Any insight?
