This happened to me on the way back from Koh Samui via Surat Thani. The minibus stopped outside some tour office in the middle of nowhere and promptly told us all that this was the end of the line. After a lot of huffing and puffing, they eventually agreed to drop us off at our hotels but we had to pay another 100baht each.
Moral of the story ? Check when booking, where you will be dropped off when returning. I assumed my hotel in Patong because that was where me and my partner were picked up. Admittedly 2 x 100baht was probably cheaper than a tuk-tuk or taxi would have cost, but what annoyed me was the 40-45 minutes wasted hanging around their offices whilst they tried selling other tours, hotels etc. After the 8 hour journey, all I wanted was a few beers, bed and a nice warm body next to me.
