I have never carried my passport with me anywhere in Thailand, and thats a lot of years. Now I keep a laminated copy in the glovebox of the car. If they dont like that, then they can drive out to Chalong with me and see the real one. I think the problem with copies is, that some folks dont copy the page with the arrival stamp and card number.
I would be very surprised if a bike rental company would accept a copy as insurance for the bike.
