Your instincts are right to wait. If you've been reading through this site then by now you should realize that no matter where you are - BKK, Phuket, Pattaya - you'll be blown away by a sea of sexy little ladies that will probably inspire you to get to work immediately.
That 1st Trip Advice from rob1199 contains more than a few tips you can take to the bank. Among them not settling for the half-rate hunees just cuz they're the first to step to you is key, and I personally think you should always keep any eye out (day or night) for a freelance hottie just to complicate matters (sidetrip?). Stay open-minded, show them respect, and try not to fall too hard for one.
And yes, you can't be too careful with the traffic there.
