Airlines have whole departments full of people and complexed software just to do yield management, to determine the best mix of cheapie and full fare to ensure a profitable flight.
For instance lets say the cheapie fare on Airline X from A to B is class W and sells at $100. There are probably only 10 seats of out say 300+ available at this fare, and once the 10 have been sold, the next cheapest fare class which maybe X is then sold. Each fare class also have different conditions, like cancellations and refunds.
