If your going to be staying longer than the 30 days, just go to the immigration office in Patong or Phuket Town *BEFORE* your 30 days are up, and you can extend for 7 or 15 days, I cant remember exactly.
A visa run, well depends on how much you want to spend, sit on a bloody bus or a plane. Lots of buses to Ranong for a day trip, or fly to Singapore for the day.
