Gez, if you have time you could apply for 60 day, I think it costs about £25, but, as you are only planning 42 days just get normal 30 day at immigration and then get 14 day extension at Patong ( costs about 1900 Baht). If, by some chance, you then decide to stay longer you would need to do a visa run. Do not let your visa expire, or overstay as the "minimum" you would get fined and could be screwed around at airport when leaving.
Other may have diffferent veiws, but this is what I've done on many occasions. Hope this helps
