Not important where you stay, meter taxies are cheap if you know where you're going.
I'd start out in afternoon with a trip to Khao San Road and Gullivers Tavern for grub, drinks and some pool, always fl's there too...

Plenty of girls in all afore mentioned places, otherwise area around Nana is good for that too, I enjoy other places more though.
