Different registrars have different solutions, with one of the registrars I used in the past it is very easy to assign a new owner to a domain and then it is off your (bulk) account and is instead attached to the new owner account.
Nowadays I use Joker.com, I am not sure how they handle ownership transfers or if they charge a fee, I never did that. I dont bothered to change registrar for my early domains either, and thus still $35/USD year for them.
For Tai Pan I registered a .st (
www.taipan.st), since the name was impossible to get under other top level domains, and they charge a bloody 35 EURO/year.
