Because,Mr Betamaxman, a cd player is much bigger,and you have to change the cd every time,as well as lug them around
You copy the cd tracks onto your PC hard disc,then upload them onto the ipod.
A mini ipod can hold 500tracks, the standard ones 5000 I am told by my nipper. Also the quality is better with no skipping of tracks.
Its very easy for someone as PC literate as yourself
