gotta a friend who lives and works in Shanghai. You are not there as long as you think, maybe allow a couple of hours for immigration (out and back in) and you only have a few hours to kill, maybe take a taxi tour round Shanghai and grab a bite to eat/drink in the nightlife spot (dont know where that is btw could ask for ya).

Arrive Bangkok 01.20(ish) , by the time you do passport control , luggage and customs , it will probably be nearer 02.15 . Then you have to check-in at Domestic at maybe 06.00-06.15 , or you really only have about 4 hours.
Guess I'd probably just get a few hours sleep , and arrive in Phuket fresh .

Being a fitness fanatic I would put on my shorts and running daps and go a couple of laps of the airport, followed by some squat-thrusts, star jumps and burpees! A quick shower, massage and ready for the next leg!
5-6 hours is an awkward period especially with a 2 hour pre arrival etc. A good book perhaps and some duty free shopping! I need one of those little Sony Mp3 thingies if you are feeling flush!

Depends on whether or not your arriving on Bangkok on Thai. If so you will be clearing immigration in Phuket and not Bangkok, otherwise you'll be clearing in Bangkok.
If your clearing in Bangkok, just go a grab a seat at the bar upstairs next to Burger King, and then make your way down to domestic later in the morning. The time does pass quickly.

Why are you going via Shanghai? Seems like a roundabout way to LOS.
Pudong airport is about 1 hour drive to Pudong and at least another 30 minutes to downtown Shanghai depending on traffic (which is usually horendous at any time let alone rush hours). There is a high speed train between Pudong airport and Hongqiao airport (which is closer to the main area of Shanghai) but I don't know if it's operating currently or what the time schedule is. I have never seen a train on the tracks.
There is nothing to do in Pudong airport, not really much to see in Shanghai with such little time except some fantastic modern architecture of some of the highrises in Pudong.
I would take a good book, buy post cards of the Pudong highrises (the pictures were taken on a rare, clear day), hang out in the coffee shop in the airport that also serves beer, cocktails, and some food and has a smoking area. Do a little duty free shopping (pick up a bottle of Balvenie Doublewood scotch for me and I'll reimburse you and buy you a drink )
In Bangkok I'd go thru immigration (it's much faster than in Phuket. You might have to pay another 50baht if your boarding pass to Phuket was issued at Heathrow), hang out in the brewpub in the domestic departure area. The Headbutt ale is pretty good.
Godspeed.....

A Burpee is a squat thrust followed by a star jump, they hurt like a bastard and I last did one in 1999!................Probably! I now do one sit up a day religeously as I reach for my fags and lighter in the morning and burn another hole in my quilt cover as I doze off again.
My roomies normally pour water on the flames for me which is my prompt to get up! Sorry, no pictures Pinto, I'll ask around and see if anyone is willing to do a burpee for you and I'll try and get some snaps! I'm just plain too old now!!

Reminds me of the Simpsons episode, where Homer as a child goes to the zoo and sees the monkies.
