Train from BKK to Chang mai

Hi All,
Ill be in thailand on christmas day with my thai Gf (fiancee) and have booked a train ticket from Bkk to Chang Mai.

Ive taken plains buses all over Thailand but now want to try the train, just because i want something different.

1st class was fully booked and i managed to get a few 2nd class cabins instead.

Does anyone know what sort of conditions these long trip trains are in?

do they serve food? serve alcohol??

Is it safe for me when i get pissed to go hand with the 3rd class cabbins? (as im a friendly person)

anyone got any info?

Last visit i went from Bkk to Surin to visit my ex-gf by train and it was really a good experience i booked the first class in a train called "sprinter" and the standard are pretty good and they serve food and you can buy drinks on the way and even order food from the staff.About if its safe when you are pissed,i would say you just have to use your common sence and as you know Thai people are friendly so i think that you will be ok.
Have a nice journey.

I did the trip 2 months ago on the overnight train.

You get 2 seats facing each other then they convert to a top and bottom bunks, they will make the bunks up for you when you want.

When you wake up they convert them back to seats for you.

There are about 20 bunks in each carriage.

Bottles of beer are served at your seat also water juice etc and the server will take your order for food, they serve a meal about an hour after you leave bangkok its pretty basic but tastes good

If I remember its about 5 or 6 items from soup rice curry or noodles coffee etc

They will also take an order then for your breakfast.

Just before you reach Chaing Mai they give you a bill for what you have had during the trip.

I have no problem with cash, just want to experience everything in Thailand.
By the sounds of it the train will be good. Just 10 hours will be the killer.

It has nothing to do with saving a few pennies Bono.

Its the experience of travelling that way, relaxing on the train having a few beers maybe etc. and as with Donz there will be a crowd of them so they will have a laugh on the way.

I have travelled all over europe on the train, and when i do catch the plane in LOS either from BKK to Phuket and back or as i did this time from Chaing rai to Bkk i go in buisness class Its only a few extra quid but slightly more comfortable if i could afford it id fly that way all the time, so im not saving then am I.

I've done the train trip from Surat Thani to Bangkok numerous times, and every time I say never again. Even in first class it is just sooo boring, but yes your right you do have to do it once.
