Phi Phi

I was there in September and it was a huge shock to see after the Tsunami. I had not been there for about five years and the changes are dramatic. The beaches and sea are as beautiful as ever and there are a lot more shops, restaurants and things to do etc. However, the side of the island where the wave came in is absolutely destroyed. Everything is gone. No hotels, palm trees, shops... nothing is there. Just beach, ocean and some chairs. It is still a nice place but tourism has also destroyed it. The Maya Bay where the Beach was filmed used to be an excellent place to snorkel, now it is dirty with fuel from the tourist boats and hardly even worth stopping at.
The best thing about Phi Phi is that it is still a smaller island with a relaxing feel to it. Would I go there again? Sure I would... but it is just sad to see it the way it is now.

Here are some pics of it in September.

Haven't been there before the tsunami so dont know what it looked like before. However I have been on two of those Phi Phi island trips - one in April 2005 and one in November 2005. The side where the boats unload looked pretty alright to me this november. However, there are still some areas in Phi Phi that is pretty busted up. One thing that I didnt like were the huge piles of trash lying around the island baking in the sun and sending out disgusting odours. Maybe the dont have the time or whatever to remove them but it is a bit of a turnoff to lie at a beautifull beach and if the wind shiftes it smells like your sitting in a dumpster.

Phi Phi islands and the area around it is absolutely beautifull. However, I dont think that I would want to spend too many days there unless I was there to do some diving or relaxing with the girlfriend.

You can see some pictures of Phi Phi island on these two links:

They have rebuilt some hotels and are building some new ones but itīs very different then before the tsunami but still worth a trip, we stayed on Andaman resort and the bungalows are new and nice, costs 1000 bath/night. All the bungalows that were on the "nice" beach, that is on the opposite of the pier, are all gone and they havenīt rebuild any of them so it looks very strange since last year. If u check out my holiday report 2 u can see picture from phi phi viewpoint from last year 2 weeks before the tsunami and now in november. Hope u and your father enjoy ur trip

well, supossedly, they put a restriction on the amount of building to be done on phi phi. they felt it was too overcrowded, but the money is the king
