£1500 gets you...

2 weeks in paradise and a life changing experience! I travelled on a budget and this was my plan.

Travel Costs
UK Train Home to Airport: ฿1,400 - £20.00
Flight: Birmingham To Bangkok: ฿29,120 - £416.00
Flight: Bangkok to Phuket 64.00 (Round Trip): ฿4,480 - £64.00
Taxi Phuket to Patong ( Round Trip): ฿1,050 - £15.00

Totals ฿36,050 £515.00

ACCOMMODATION
C & N Hotel Patong 12 Nights ฿13,200 - £188.57
Bangkok Hotel 1 night ฿2,800 - £40.00

Totals ฿16,000 £228.57

Spending Money Per Day
Bar Fines ฿500 - £7.14
Bar Girl ฿1,000 £14.29
Drinks x 2 = 20 Beers ฿1,300 - £18.57
Food x2 in restaurant ฿700 - £10.00

Totals ฿3,500 - £50.00

TRAVEL ฿36,050 - £515.00
ACCOMMODATION ฿16,000 - £228.57
SPENDING MONEY (14 DAYS) ฿49,000 - £700.00

TOTALS ฿101,050 £1,443.57

It could be done and was a useful calculation before my trip thanks to all the information I got from members here, the information is excellent. I of course went over budget on some things and under on others. Not by a great deal as I ate on the street most evenings, didn't need to pay a bargirl every night *in fact hardly, more on that later* and of course bought trinkets and gifts. I had a thoroughly amazing time; the trip has SERIOUSLY changed my whole life. Thank you to all the members who made my trip easy by sharing all their information.

Just to add a point here, a £1500 investment has changed my whole life!! If you are reading this "thinking" of going to Thailand, STOP THINKING and just go!!

Hi jp110378

Welcome to the forum

Well as you are on THE Phuket forum, then the island of Phuket would be a good place to start.

Patong, for its nightlife is the most popular, and the busiest area.
Have a good read of the forum, especially have a look at the photos in the gallery, and then post any questions you have in the "newbie" section where questions that may have been asked before will again be answered.

Makes you think tho, because I've not done a trip for that kind of money for a while, I would guess normally +50%, but it's hard to argue with his numbers.

I agree. What about water, soft drinks? And beach chairs, drinks on the beach, an icecream... no tuktuk or taxi? No Laundry, Boots, newspaper, Phuket Gazette, postcards, other expenses? Just staying i the hotel/Bangla? And a limit of 700 Baht a day for food, never more. And a limit of 500+1000 for girls, never anything a bit over the limit?
Sorry, this is not my kind of holiday. I may grumble after that I spent to much, but a thight budget like that...

My friend, I was merely showing what COULD be achieved with limited funds and how so. Of course I took a tuk tuk (one) had a suit made (1) and bought jeans. I also didn't pay 1000THB every day for a bar girl, I was lucky enough to find a companion who didn't require 1000THB a day. And I ate for 40/60 THB on the street most days. I couldn't list everything to the nearest penny I spent but was showing a guideline as to what can realisticaly be achieved on limited funds. I read many posts before going to the LOS that dictated I had £100.00 spending money per day. Some days I did just that, some I spent less than £10.00 it is all relative wouldn't you say?

It may not have been your type of holiday, and you seem lucky enough to be able to do a lot more that I did. However, I enjoyed every second I was there and all for £1500 quid. Which is probably less than most Brits spend in Spain or France in one week! That budget will enable me to be back in Thailand in 10 short weeks to live it all again.

OK. I can agree with that. It's logic. Have fun next trip and I hope it works out for you with your friend. Personally after 40 trips I am a bit sceptical, but maybe you are lucky.

I spent weeks here when I spent less than 1500 baht a week, but that was staying in watching TV and the rent was covered.

You can spend as much or as little as you want, 50 quid a day would easily cover a holiday if your not doing too many touristy things (boat trips etc..) and your hotel is covered.

Obviously not everyone is the same, for example from my November trip...

water - no cost
soft drinks - 4 diet cokes from minibar every day @ 40baht = 2,000baht
beach chairs - what beach ? 55555
drinks on the beach - never made it there
an icecream - yes, but not on the beach, 75baht x 5 = 375baht
tuktuk - the guest house is very close to Bangla Road, but I'll lob down 2 per day at 100baht = 2,500baht
Laundry - 4 times, average cost 100baht = 400baht
Boots - ?? Wellingtons in LOS ?? 55555 No visits to the chemists required, I brought mine with me
newspaper - nope, I'm on holiday
Phuket Gazette - free in guest house bar
postcards - nope
other expenses? - incidentals say....5,000baht (shooting etc)
a limit of 700 Baht a day for food - easily done, even though I love my food, I found it hard to spend much especially once you get to know where the best foodstands are and breakfast is 100baht at the guest house.
a limit of 500+1000 for girls - I only paid 1 bar fine and L/T 1,700baht as I had girlfriend in tow (except first night) let's leave that the same as has been mentioned above for S/T, L/T B/F costs.

This means that I have had to add another 11,925baht (another £170), which still means the total cost is around £1,500/£1,600 as quoted above and I had a great time.

It's really a question of what type of holidaymaker you are and what you are looking for in a holiday, because I was with my girlfriend, it didn't necessarily mean that I was out spending 3,000-4,000baht every day/night. I think Zippo's main point was that it is not as expensive as some might think (i.e. those thinking about going to LOS but are not sure, maybe because of cost?).
