Thinking of spending some time "over the hill". Anyone have any wisdom for gf hotels in Kamala or Surin? What is the nightlife like? All I need is a bar or two and some good company.........

This place is run by a couple of Hashers and you might be lucky to get a place there.If too expensive then The Club next door also has good rooms.

The guys in Kamala do their drinking in the Kamala Beer Garden on the Main Road,the Ban Rim Klong on Main Road,and Hans Christan Andersen on the Beach Road.There are many other small bars to have fun in too. And,yes ,there are some ladies too.

Tom & Marina Guest House in Kamala is very nice.
It is fairly new, rooms are clean, guest friendly.
Couple of minutes walk to bars.
10 minutes walk to beach.
800 baht a night.

a five-minute walk up the hill from Kamala
stayed here in Dec.-Jan.
very nice -- run by Lek & Silvio (Italian, speaks good English)
open-air restaurant/bar (with very low drink prices)
bungalow with snooker table
rooms have SAT TV, A/C, fridge, private bath w/great shower
(the best rooms are on the second floor -- with common balcony)
prices are reasonable: 750-900 baht with Internet booking, discounts available
(in fact, tell them that "Mark from New Mexico" recommended the place and maybe they drop the price some more -- a friend of mine just stayed there for 600 baht per night)
they will arrange tours for you if that's your thing -- usually getting you a Thai price rather than farang price
the owner's nephew will give you very good motorbike taxi rates; you can call and he'll come to pick you up as well (lower prices than if you hail a motorbike or tuk-tuk up on the road)
good laundry service

oh, yes -- VERY guest-friendly;
took a girl back from Patong on my first night there and the next morning, the owner's wife doted all over her giving her a free breakfast and then gave us complimentary drinks to take back up to the room for another round!

(on NYE, the owner's wife introduced me to several girls; the one I picked stayed in my room for the rest of my stay -- no extra charge; she wasn't a BG so there was no charge for the sex either, we've fallen in love and I return to LOS in April to see if we're still good together; she wants me to stay at her apartment in Kathu but we may spend a night at L&S just for sentimental purposes..)
