Phuket Thailand - Thai Airways Ask For Credit Card At Check In?

I am travelling alone on Tuesday the 21st of February and land in Bangkok on the 22nd at 18.05.

Slight problem here guys, a friend of mine paid for the flight from Bangkok to Phuket on his credit card via the internet. The itinery came through stating that the credit card must be produced at check in. Have you had this happen to you or is this red tape that never really happens?

He is a good friend but no way would I expect him to lend me his card to produce at check in! My name is obviously different to the card holder although passenger details are of course mine. I may have to ask for a refund if I am going to face a problem at Bangkok on Wednesday at 6.00pm trying to get a flight to Phuket.

Your thoughts please?

Yes, I have had this happen on several occasions. I suggest you telephone the airline as soon as possible and ask them to comment in order to avoid any disappointment at the airport, e.g. not allowing you to fly.

Have booked tickets Bangkok - Phuket from Thai's web-site and had the same thing saying you must produce credit card. Have never been asked for it at check-in , think it is just a safety measure to ensure Credit Card has not been stolen. Don't think you'd have a problem , as you will have your passport as I.D.

You are partially correct here Faulty old chap, however just showing your passport doesn't mean that you did not fraudulently use someone else's credit card, i.e. you could have stolen and used it and of course, the credit card doesn't have your name on it.

Have booked many flights where 'show your credit card' was part of the conditions - never yet been asked.
That said, if you are worried, call the airline.

Me too. Booked Thai from BKK to HKT return last trip,and got e tickets.
I had my card but wasn't asked to show it.

But I'd hate to be turned off the flight if I was asked and couldn't produce it.
So its good advise to call the airline and explain the situation for clarification.

actually, ive been asked for my credit card on almost every occasion.

i may be doing this very soon, i might just call thai airways and explain the situation

I am aware it is a 'usual' condition, I am flying with Emirates, same drama but called them and they were fine about it. Called Thai here in the UK and they explain you must show the card. This I can imagine by 'some' airlines but at BKK? Internal flight to HKT?

Every flight I have ever taken, I have NEVER been asked for a card but as the time I land in Bangkok is 6.05pm my flights to Phuket are limited on time. Nok Air finished by then, Air Asia, only two flights so I booked with Thai online to be safe now this!

Hence my question on here, specificaly aimed at you guys traveling BKK to HKT with Thai and being asked. I am thinking I will have to bite the bullet and if hit a road block pay up the cash (AGAIN) for my own seat

If I have to make a phone call to a cetain girl saying I am stuck in Bangkok no matter my tale, she will believe I am in Pattaya!

It is a condition of etickets used by every airline. Every eticket I have purchased, I have been asked for the credit card. I see this as a good thing.

Don't disagee that it's a good thing, just never been asked by BA, AA, Emirates, Bangkok Airways, SQ, Silk , Air Asia, QR, etc all on e-tickets or picking up paper tickets at the airport.

I think you'll find its got a lot to do with the country your flying out off and what rules and conditions are imposed locally. It is only the first flight on the ticket that you'll need to present the card for.

Flying out of Australia you will asked every time, well I have been. Thinking back I was also asked everytime I flew out of Phuket on Tiger Airways, Silk Air and Thai Air, on ticket thats where purchased in Thailand.

4 website booked flights, and had to produce the card for every one. I would really call the airline and get it worked out before you get to the airport.

Actually come to think of it, I mostly book Singapore Airlines online and there is a popup before booking stating that the credit card holder MUST be one of the travelling party.

What about other airline online booking engines, does this message also come up.

Web based with American the same thing, in fact I bought some theater tickets and they would not give them to me until I produced the card.

I booked a flight with Thai Airways through their website (Royal e-booking) in January from Bangkok to Phitsanulok.
Although I have a Royal Orchid card (frequent flyer), I was asked for my credit card at check-in. It was the first time that it happened to me although I used their e-booking system alot of times.
I think I've seen somewhere that the credit card holder must be one of the passengers... so I suggest you to contact THAI and explain them your case.

I've booked on line and travelled with several different a/lines including TG. on many occasions and have never been asked for my card, although I always carry it just in case.
Considering other BMs. comments, maybe some people just look "shifty"

When you read the rules of ebooking, there it a notice, that one of the passengers MUST BE the credit card holder. But normally it is sufficient if you can show the printed paper from internet on checkin.

But for boarding you need an official document which shows the same name as is printed on the ticket.

Just to add a little info on other airlines. I booked a fight from LAX on China Air and booked the return flight on EVA from BKK-LAX. I used virtual credit card numbers so could not produce the card when asked by both airlines. China Air let me on in LAX after I explained. EVA required me to sign a form including my real credit card number, in case there was a problem, before they would let me check in.

You lost me here, If you used virtual credit card numbers which i presume are not the real ones how did you pay for the flight.

My credit card company has a computer program that generates what they call a virtual credit card number. This is a card number that it tied to my real credit card and is billed to my real credit card. The virtual card number expires the month after it is issued. The idea is if your credit card info is stolen at a later date the virtual card number will have already expired and be worthless. I typically generate a new virtual card number for anything I purchase on the Internet.
