Geckos?
Quick question...
Just read in a travel guide that it's common for hotel rooms in Thailand to have Geckos (small lizards)... was wondering if this is generally true in Phuket?

We get Geckos all the time here in Western Australia but have not ever seen any in the rooms in LOS. Little buggers are pretty good at keeping the flies and spiders away.

Yeah they are cool little buggers, stick to the wall like glue. As Aussiedollar said they make a noise and I didnt realize that until one night when it was real quiet and I kept hearing this funny clicking sound and the missus said it was the gecko. Love seeing them around the hotels and they have never been a problem.

gecko s*it
love those little geckos
always happy to see them, but they do leave s*it around the place
in papua new guinea, nobody harms or touches them, because they are said to be spirits of your ancestors.
told my gf that, and she told everyone in the family, now it seems they are becoming revered the same way in a small village in the issan
another superstition implanted in the issan.

Lucky geckos
I have a few that roam around the bar and occasionally one will fall off the ceiling and splat on the floor.Despite falling about twelve feet it just gets up and scoots off. They can be fun to watch.
A lot of Thais consider the house to be lucky if geckos are living in it.

Do they eat mossies? Gee, I will train a couple up as pets if they do. Mossies are the bane of my life in Thailand

mossie killers
yes steve, they are mossie eating machines, always glad to see them at the gfs house. but obviously not enough geckos or praying mantis, because the mossies still come for me.
so out with the DEET, whilst all the thais look at me as a weird farang.
my gf told me about the new pond her father and uncle built for the 200 cat fish, lovely more places for the mossies to breed, unless the cat fish get them all.

Geckos are cool - but the Thai girls are afraid of them - especially if they fall on you, its very bad luck.

I have some that live in my condo, beautiful creatures.
When I return after a few weeks away there's gecko sh-t everywhere. Stuck to the walls, ceilings, work surfaces on the bed. My storeroom is full of them and whenever you open the door and go in they seem to panic, drop off the ceiling onto you and run up your leg etc. I still love them.
My g/friend said, why you not chase away, she wouldn't harm them but dos'nt like them in the house. At her house she catches them and puts them in a box and releases them down the road.

not sure of that old tradition, but i suppose amongst the BGS Ken is as good as Sven as is Ben.
seems like theres a lot of blokes called jimmy up in the issan, maybe the jimmys beat the kens to that tradition.

Skewered on a kebab F2H yum!
Joking apart, we have them here, they live in the air-con units and are really a benefit in keeping the Mozzie population down. I used to have quite a few living in my television set when I lived in Cyprus (Not a place I would choose to live! Bit small for me too!) but they never seem to come to any harm in there!
Used to love having family over to Cyprus on holidays, settling in at night to watch a Video (Remember them?? 5555555) and watching the looks on their faces as these things crawled out through the back of the tele and sat on the top looking back at them. Kept me amused watching Granny jump over the back of the settee!

The best way to not get bitten by mossies is to hang out with me, I am a mossie magnet..

Have a whole family of them living under my freezer!
Occasionally one of them sticks their heads out to say hello, but other than that no problem, they usually pop out in the evening for a bite, so I make sure I put the outside light on to attract the bugs for them.
I'm quite happy to have them around with is more than I can say for the snake that turned up one day
