I have never heard about this problem before....Just book another hotel, there are loads of hotels in Patong who will never ask you if you travel alone or not when you book a double room.

Maybe check that a single room means a room with ONE double bed?(not a single size bed).
A 'double' room could contain TWO DOUBLE beds!?

You may well be right but still room for interpretation 'single' could still mean ONE (single) double bed. Ask them for a measurement. Never come across a single bed in Thailand myself!

Bit of a surprise that, loads of reports about Patong Villa and I can't recall anyone else mentioning that, but if it's that specific then I'm with Alfie; change hotels.
The Salathai might suit you as well, budget sounds about right.
I do recall this happening to me once in Nakhonsawan, I could not make them understand 'double bed'. It was either 1 bed or 2 bed, twin or 'single', so maybe 'double' is a tricky word? That said, Patong is not the boonies, and the must all know what 'double bed' means surely?

Hi steve
This is what they put....i thought it was a bit wierd as well....maybe its the booking agents
Regarding your request, we sincerely regret for being unable to process this booking at the moment since the hotel is unable to assign a Double Room for only 1 guest occupy.
Please note the hotel's policy as below;
- Single Room (The room with 1 single bed) is assigned for 1 guest occupy.
- Double Room (The room with 1 big bed) is assigned for 2 guests occupy.
- Twin Room (The room with 2 single beds) is assigned for 2 guests occupy.
- Triple Room (The room with 3 single beds or 1 small single bed and 1 big bed) is assigned for 3 guests occupy.
May we suggest you to book for a Single Rooms instead and please kindly advise us of your acceptance by return in order to process your booking urgently
There you go,,,joydivision

Why are you booking through an agent, Why not go directly to the hotel?

Go direct to the hotel, you will get far more sense by the look of it.

Well if you really want to stay there, Its looks like your only choice is to cough up the extra 100bt a night or pick a different hotel buddy.....
PS: What dates are you traveling to Phuket on?

Sure the rooms during them dates are well within your budget, 1600bt for a standard and 1900bt for a Deluxe/Superior.... And seeing as your staying for 2weeks you might get them to take a few baht off that price....

Late stays has a standard room on offer at 1300 baht, stating that the published price is 2200baht(not quite right, website says 1600baht)
http://www.latestays.com/patong-villa
and the standard room in the photographs on the website show a double bed not that it means anything

Never book through agents...............always book direct with the hotel............even if an agent has a better offer.......tell the hotel and they will always match it.........
To my knowledge PV books rooms not people so it is the same rate whether for one or two people (from my experience your "agent" is taking the piss)...but always tell them you are booking for 2 not one..............they also give a discount rate for returning guests.....and for long stays
When booking direct with them tell them you want one large bed.....no twins......
ask them to confirm that there will be no joiner fee......and take this notice of your booking with you just in case there is any dispute..........
I've never had one despite staying at PV about 6 times

They have single beds in PV. My room had 2 singles pushed together. It must have been 7 foot wide.Plenty big enough. If I booked into a hotel in Patong with a single bed I would be checking out immediately.Joiner or no joiner a larger bed is a must.

Joydivision,
My personal suggestion is…. book directly with the hotel.
I’ve stayed there before and never had any problems.
On the (online) booking form, clearly state that you need one room for 2 people. (like I did below):
Room Type : Deluxe , Single
Number of Rooms : 1
Number of Persons : 2
Arrival Date : 16 , March , 2006
Departure Date : 20 , March , 2006
Even if it says single, the beds are huge, believe me.
Looks like we’ll be at the PV at the same time, maybe we could have a beer or two in MTB
Cheers
