I had my hotel arrange transfer, van to ferry dock and then ferry to Phi Phi. They also booked me a room at Bayview for 3100bht. I stayed there one night and checked out, the rooms are nice but they are located on the top of a hill and are on the far end of the beach far away from everything, got tired of walking up and down ithat damn hill. I went around and checked prices, found Phi Phi Island Villa for 2400 bht and the rooms looked great, until you get inside! Worst room I had in Thailand, bathroom smelled horrible and ladyboy at desk was rough to deal with. So again, I checked out and went farther down the path to Banyan Villa. This is the place to stay IMHO, very nice rooms, close to all of the restaraunts, bars and has a very nice pool. Think I paid $2800bht for a deluxe room in the new garden wing. Worth every penny and I will stay there next time.
Guess what I am trying to say is that unless you get some unbelievable deal just book it yourself and avoid the busses and tour groups. Check latestays.com or send a few emails, you should find a good deal. I'm also a little bit adverse to travel groups tours as they usually involve being shoved into busses or minivans like cattle. They also give you the parking lot tour as they pick up every other Farang in Patong. So I made sure that I got a private car to and from the ferry dock, more expensive but I saved time and aggrevation. The $500bht was worth every sent as we sped to Phuket dock and bypassed the tourist shops.

Sorry, I saw it but I never went in to it. You'll be really happy with Banyan, the only thing it lacks is a direct ocean view but you get that every other moment your on Phi Phi. Make sure that you go to Carpe Deim for dinner or drinks one night, you can eat right on the beach and the owner Peter puts on an amazing fire show.

I'm toying with the idea of popping over to Phi Phi on my next trip for a couple of days, can i just tip up at the ferrydock and buy tickets? or do I need to visit a travel agent first?

There's a multitude of agents selling trips all over Thailand, mainly on Rat u Thid Rd. Most hotels can arrange Phi Phi trips as well but check how much as it may be cheaper to get elsewhere. I'd book beforehand myself.

You can just turn up and buy ticket if want to,depends on what time of year you intend to visit(high season best to book first)

phi phi hotels
For more info on Phi Phi and hotels there, try http://phi-phi.com; a lot of the local agents especially in Patong have quite uncompetitive rates (or is it called greediness). Sure good enough for a short hop, but if you would like to stay for a few nights...
