I usually use Thai and book in advance on the web for the same price.

Do a search of the forum for which other airlines fly the route and visit their websites as some do have special offers for advance booings.

The other two main carriers are Air Asia which often have very cheap deals or Bangkok Airways. BKK Airways are a little cheaper than Thai [around 4600 ret v 5200return]

www.airasia.com
www.bangkokairways.com

Nok Air also give a pretty good price. Her is the link to their website

I have just booked my internal flights for April. Bangkok to Chiang Mai (Airasia), Chiang Mai to Phuket (Thaiair) and Phuket to Bangkok (Nokair plus), so I will be able to compare the 3 different airlines. Seriously the reason I booked with different airlines was to do with:
(a) Timings (Airasia had the most suitable flight available for my onward flight to Chiang Mai when I arrive in Bangkok)
(b) Convenience (Thaiair were the only suitable option for a direct flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket)
(c) Baggage allowance (Nokair plus have a 30kg allowance which I thought would be the best option considering that I will be lugging my extra shopping on this flight)
